Symmetry

As part of our Geometry unit, we learned about symmetry. After reading The Emperor's New Clothes, we acted out scenes from the story using symmetrical body movements. We looked to Hans Christian Andersen for inspiration. Not only was Andersen a talented story teller, he was also a talented paper cutter:

The students created paper cuttings inspired by The Emperor's New Clothes
and wrote about whether or not their artwork was symmetrical.

Fact Families

On Thursday, July 26, we learned about fact families.
A fact family is a collection of related addition and subtraction facts
made from the same numbers.
As a class, we used fish-shaped pretzels to see how to make a family of facts.

Class Math Story

On Thursday, as a class, we created our own Math Story.
We chose the characters, the setting, the plot, and the numbers.
The students collaborated on the telling of the story,
which I scribed for them.

"One day, Spongebob was feeding Gary."

"Then Patrick came over to go jelly fishing with Spongebob."

"Spongebob and Patrick got their nets and went jelly fishing.
And Scooby Doo jumped out of the T.V.!"

"Scooby Doo took greater than one but less than four pieces
of Gary's food."

"Spongebob and Patrick came back from jelly fishing
and saw Scooby Doo eating Gary's food.
They screamed!"


"Spongebob and Patrick got their nets and tried to catch Scooby Doo
but he jumped back into the T.V.!"

Secret Number Drawings

On Monday, we learned about a folk artist named Horace Pippin. Through his painting, "Interior," we we talked about time, pattern, and repetition. We discovered how Pippin created a "secret number" in his painting by repeating objects by threes. For example in "Interior," we found three people, three rugs, and three cracks in the wall.

Then, we made our own secret number drawings. Can you guess our secret numbers?

Welcome to Summer School!

We are so glad to have you on our summer math adventure!

-School begins on Monday, July 9th at 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Summer school is Monday through Thursday; and August 2nd will be our last day!

-Bring a snack! We will have snack time everyday.

-The county has provided us with supplies, however, students may wish to bring their own pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, etc.

-Each student will receive a "Take Home" folder on the first day of school. Please check it everyday for homework, letters home, and forms.

*Please fill out the Emergency Card in your child's Take Home Folder on the first day of summer school and return it to us!
